About Token-Calculator.net

Thinking in tokens is the new literacy of the AI age. We built Token-Calculator.net to help developers, researchers, and businesses accurately estimate costs and optimize prompts for Large Language Models.

Our Mission

As LLM pricing models become more complex and context windows grow larger, "eyeballing" costs is no longer sufficient. Our mission is to provide a transparent, precise, and secure toolset for the AI community.

Why Trust Us?

  • Engineering Precision: We use a local token-counting engine for fast estimates and practical API cost planning.
  • Privacy First: We understand that prompts often contain proprietary code or sensitive PII. That's why the public calculator runs client-side in your browser.
  • Source Transparency: We link model rates to official provider pricing pages from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google so estimates can be checked against source material.
  • Developer Workflow: The paid API is designed for apps, scripts, and internal tools that need token, character, and word counts without adding a full tokenizer stack.

Browser Tool and API

The public browser calculator is built for private, quick checks before an LLM request. API access is separate: developers can create a key, send text to /api/v1/tokenize, and receive count metrics in JSON. The API records usage metrics for account reporting, but it does not store submitted text.

What We Cover

The site focuses on practical LLM planning: token counting, cost estimation, model price comparison, GPU memory estimation, token generation speed, and tokenization guidance. Each tool is designed to answer a specific preflight question before a team spends money or engineering time on an AI workflow.

The Team

Token-Calculator.net is maintained by a small team of AI engineers and web performance experts passionate about the open web.
